- Course objectives
- The course will focus on the history of Czech cinema from its beginnings to the end of the Fifties. The lectures will concentrate on the early era of Czech cinema from the second half of 1890s to 1918, Czech cinema in the two periods of so called „First Czechoslovak Republic“, in the protectorate era and on the first two decades of Czech cinema after its nationalization in 1945. In detail we will focus not only on characteristic trends, genres and filmmakers, but also on political, cultural and institutional conditions, which determined the development of Czech cinema and shaped its works.

- Expansion and institutionalization of Czech cinema in the 1920s
- Czech sound cinema in the 1930s
- Czech cinema in the protectorate era
- Nationalization and development of Czech cinema in the era of „Third Czechoslovak Republic“ (from 1945 to 1948)
- Czech cinema in the communist era (from 1948 to 1960)
