Syllabus
  • The seminar combines the practice of translation with theoretical linguistic analysis based on the comparison of an English text with its Czech translation. Each week students will translate a passage of text (fiction only: D.H. Lawrence, J. Joyce, J.K.Jerome). Their translations will then be analyzed and compared with published translations of the text. The text analysis will be made against the theoretical linguistic background. The range of the topics dealt with will cover grammatical, semantic, pragmatic, and stylistic aspects. The seminar, designed for advanced students, will go into more specialist issues. - translation as a decision-making process - stylistic strata - cultural differences and translation - grammatical, semantic and pragmatic considerations - functional sentence perspective and translation - English word order versus Czech word order - English syntax versus Czech syntax - nominalization in English - nouns, verbs and adjectives in English and in Czech - semantic delimitation of word classes and translation - semantic structure of English and Czech verbs - English proper names and their Czech equivalents - punctuation in English and in Czech
