Course objectives
The aim of the course is to analyse some important theories of intentionality designed for the analysis and the interpretation of the literary work. We will devote special attention to the analytic theories of the american literary theory (E. D. Hirsch, P. D. Juhl, M. Hancher). The concept of intentionality will lead us to the examination of the distinction between the meaning and the significance of the literary work. Extracts of particular literary texts will serve as the base for follow-up discussion.

  • Work - text distinction. Is postmodern contextualism defendable? & Jan Mukařovský: intentionality and unintentionality. Intentionality viewed by Roman Ingarden. & Author's intention. Does the author know everything about his work? Poe's The Philosophy of Composition & Do author's intentions determine the meaning of the literary work? P. D. Juhl. & Author's intention as the ethical norm in the process of interpretation. E. D. Hirsch. & Intentionality and the performative act. M. Hancher. & Reader's intention. Recontextualization of the text with respect to reader's aims. Semantic nihilism of R. Rorty and postmodernism. & "Intentio operis". U. Eco.
