Course objectives
The course is devoted to the problems of Judaism and antisemitism in the Czech literature. The main goal is to introduce these works of Czech literarture, which are involved in this topics in years 1850 - 1950. Students will analyse how the writers present their positions on Judaism in their works. The basis of seminar is a detailed interpretation of selected leterary works, they'll be defined also in larger historic, social and cultuiral context.
Syllabus
  • Basically the course will bring out the situation of Jewry in 19th and 20th century in the Czech Republic and world-wide. There will be explained the meanings of those terms: semitismus, filosemitismus, asemitismus, antisemitism, antijudaismus, antisionismus. We'll pay attention to authors whose literary production reflects the understanding and the affinity for the destiny of the Jewish population (J. Vrchlický, J. S. Machar, Jar. Kvapil, J. Opolský, R. R. Hofmeister, A. Jirásek, Z. Winter, K. Klostermann, G. Preissová, T. G. Masaryk, B. Benešová, A. M. Tilschová, J. Merhaut, A. Stašek, L. Klíma, M. Majerová, E. Bass, M. Jesenská atd.). Their works will be confronted with the works of the antisemitic and asemitic authors, who campaigned against the Jewish people and criticised their hypothetical negative characteristics (e.g. J. Neruda, J. Herben, J. Holeček, V. Mrštík, P. Bezruč, K. Dostál - Lutinov, V. Dyk, J. Klecanda, F. Pravda, K. Rolling, R. Medek, J. Deml, E. Vachek, J. Hašek, K. M. čapek - Chod). An important attention will be devoted to the Czech Jewish authors, in the first place V. Vohryzek, E. Lederer, V. Rakous, M. Lederer, E. Hostovský, V. Markus, F. Gellner, R. Illový, R. Weiner, O. Fischer, F. Gottlieb, F. Langer . The seminar will be refered also the the acivity of Jewish authors who wrote in German and who are mentioned together under the concept of "Prague German literature" - F. Kafka, M. Brod, F. Werfel, E. E. Kisch, G. Meyrink aj. The course will also present the aktivities of Jewish authors in the Czech periodics and in the Zionistic press, issued in Czechoslovakia(česložidovský kalendář, českožidovské listy, židovský kalendář atc.). One of the seminars will be devoted to the literature which came into existence just defore, during and at the end of 2nd world war. The main attention will be brought to the works of Jewish authors but also to the reflections of their experiences in literary production.
