Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint the listeners with the basic of phonetics and phonology, in particular: with the basic definitions of the branch, with the specifics of written and spoken language, with general rules ot the Czech orthography and their realization in the text, with the rules of orthoepy etc. Learners have to manage with the phonetic and phonological analysis of the text (transcription) and defining of the Czech sounds.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. 2. Explanation of general definitions 3. Written and spoken language, general rules of the Czech orthography. 4. Orthoepy. 5. Phonetic transcription, its principles for the Czech language. 6. The classification of vowels, orthoepical problems of vowels. 7. Consonants, the classification. 8. Phonetic phenomena of continuous speech. Division of continuous speech, its means and consepuences. Stress. 9. The list of Czech phonemes, the methods of defining. 10. Alophones of segmental phonemes. Result of assimilation. 11. The phonological system of Czech, its relations. Correlation. 12. Phonological in Czech. 13. Morphonology in Czech. The seminar includes the explanation of definitions with the usage of individual reports of the students (every student once for a term, orally, in order to judge the level of his spoken language and draw his attention at some drawbacks). The reports are added by the teacher, the notes are used during the individual analysis of the texts. The seminar comes out from the literary language, it does not follow the dialectical or pathological pronunciation.

Assessment methods (in Czech)
Podmínky absolvování semináře: aktivní účast ve výuce, referát v semináři. Ukončením předmětu je zkouška. Podmínkou přistoupení ke zkoušce je úspěšné absolvování semináře. Zkouška se skládá z části písemné (fonetický a fonologický přepis textu ověřující schopnost anylýzy, fonologické určení hlásek ve vybrané části textu, vysvětlení některých termínů; při neznalosti se ve zkoušce nepokračuje) a z čáísti ústní, která prověří nejen pasivní znalost, ale i schopnost osvojené poznatky přednést a vysvětlit.
