Thorough knowledge of Latin (in extend of the B. A. State Exam in Latin Language and Literature, but the Exam itself is not required).

Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
- to get an overview of the Latin literary production in Europe in high Middle Ages
- to present popular genres of the 12th century and their development in comparison with the situation in previous centuries: hagiography, historiography, secular and sacred lyrics
- relations between Latin and vernacular literatures in the Middle Ages
- main cultural centers in Europe
- so called humanism of the 12th century
Syllabus
  • 1) The most important genres of Latin literature of the 12th century
  • 2) Specific features of the literature of the 12th century
  • 3) Centers of translation in Salerno and Toledo
  • 4) Reception of Greek and Arabic science literature and their impact on the West
  • 5) Relations between Latin literature and arising national literatures
  • 6) So called humanism of the 12th century

Assessment methods
Lecture. Oral Examination. Students should prove knowledge of the development of the main medieval literary genres, their most important representatives and important cultural centers of medieval Europe. Translation of a chosen text is a part of the examination.
