Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a survey of the development of the Serbian literature since 1945 to the present day. The characteristics of the dominant styles, genres, tendencies and creative methods is based on the contextual analysis of the most significant works of the period. Serbian literature is examined in the context of the domestic as well as European historical and cultural developments. The seminar is based on the intensive home reading and the individual as well as collective analysis of the relevant texts. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of the contemporary Serbian literature and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.

  • 1. Socialist realism. 2. Experimental fiction. 3. Generation of Kiš, Pekić and Kovač. 4. Serbian Neo-realists. 5. Postmodernism. 6. Serbian urban ficton. 7. David Albahari, Svetislav Basara and other formal experimentators. 8. Nationalist and populist fiction of the 80s and 90s. 9. Fiction of the turn of the century. 10. Traditional stream of Serbian Literature (Maksimović, Massuka etc.). 11. Neosymbolism, neoclassicism, neoromantism. 12. Poetry inspired by myth and folklore. New verism. Poezie inspirovaná mýtem a folklórem, novoveristé. 13. Poetry of the turn of the century and the final summary.

Lectures, home reading, class discussion, essay.
Assessment methods
Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance (maximum of 3 absences during a semester) and thorough home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion, handing in an essay. Final exam has a form of a written test.
