Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give students an idea of what it is like to be a translator working for the European Commission. This intensive one-week course (four lessons per day) will be given by Phil Rhodes, an experienced translator of many years' standing at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation. The course is not intended to teach translation techniques – only what, why and with what resources we translate at the European Commission’s DG for Translation. There will be a final test at the end of the course.
Syllabus
  • Introduction: general PowerPoint presentation on the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation (DGT). Questions. Discussion. Further: the kinds of text translated at the DGT, translation products, approaches, quality levels. Overview + live on-line demonstration of the tools and applications used at the DGT. Questions. Discussion. Final test. Results of final test. Wrapping up.
