Course objectives
The course is designed as an introduction to Czech structuralism in exile. It focuses on an analysis of forms of Czech structuralist thought in the work of R. Wellek, R. Jakobson, L. Matějka, M. Součková, F. Galán, J. Veltruský, M. Grygar, K. Chvatík, L. Doležel, E. Volek, P. Steiner, J. Toman, T. Winner etc. Their conceptions are compared to Russian Formalism, New Criticism and French Structuralism.
The aims of the course are:
to analyse the contribution of the Prague School to both Czech and world literary theory
to describe the links between Czech and world literary theory
to provide the students with a wide range of literary theoretical texts.

  • (a) An overview of history of Czech Structuralism; (b) Leaders of the Prague Linguistic Circle; (c) The first exile: Roman Jakobson a René Wellek; (d) The second exile: L. Matějka, M. Součková, F. W. Galán, J. Veltruský; (e) The thirth exile: L. Doležel, F. Svejkovský, E. Volek, P. Steiner, J. Toman, K. Chvatík, M. Grygar etc; (f) Czech Structuralism in the context of world literary theory.
