Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to understand the basic elements of the architecture in the Middle Ages; is really something like the "romanesque style"? and the "gothic style"? how can we to connect the Semperian view of the material, technology and function, resp. the visual meaning with the architecture in the Middle Ages? The aim of the seminar is an oveview of the history and methods for these architectural styles and an introduction into the further study of theme.

  • 1. An Introduction into the romanesque architecture: historiography- principles- design- methods (E.H. Gombrich, E. Fernie).& 2. The Origins of the romanesque architecture I.: the stereotomy in Rome.& 3. The Origins of the romanesque architecture II.: The Architecture of the Barbarians.& 4. Raoul Glaber and „premier art roman“: the technics, concepts, aesthetics.& 5. New concept of the space in the 2nd Half of the 11th Century: the light, vault, the great buildings.& 6. Years of 1100-1150: the romanesque "schools".& 7. The Cistercian stereotomy.& 8. Image of the antique architecture: the "protorenaissanceance" in Toscana and Rome.& 9. The Gothic architecture in the work of Paul Frankl.& 10. The French gothic and its social background (Kimpel-Suckale).& 11. The late gothic architecture in the Central Europe.& 12. The "Acyrism" and the flamboyant gothic art.&

Assessment methods
The course will be taught as a seminar with a short lecture of clarification of basic themes; the most importance aim of this seminar will be the acquaintence of students with literature on the medieval architecture. There will be no exam for this course, but only a colloquium by class participation and the credit for the short book review.
