Course objectives
Introduction into the problems of early medieval architecture, especially the ecclesiastical architecture, but also the architecture and building exclusive of ecclesiastical districts (palaces, residential buildings, fortifications and urbanism of important agglomerations)
Syllabus
  • Main thematic areas: 1. principles of early medieval architecture 2. origin of central and longitudinal building type, function 3. architecture vs. liturgy – structure of interior 4. architectural décor and its structure, architectural sculpture, murals, stuccos 5. overview of important European locations since the 7/8th up to the half of the 11th century with the emphasis on the area of the former Czechoslovakia. Excursion - Great Moravian architecture in Moravia and Western Slovakia
