- Course objectives
- This course examines the issue of the development of Czech and German Catholicism within the Czech lands as a phenomenon which affected not only the church, but whose consequences were felt also in the public sphere. The seminars aim to present the main tendencies in the structural and ideological characteristics of both Catholic communities in the Czech lands within the context of the development of papal politics and the growth of Catholicism in Central Europe.
- Syllabus
- 1.) An outline of Catholic activity as a reaction to the modernisation of society in Czech and German environs from the end of the 19th century to the First World War; the formation of a “column culture” – the origin of Catholic unions and political parties; the main ideological currents within Czech and German Catholicism in the Czech lands; the influence of papal politics in forming a European Catholicism during this period.
- 2.) The Catholic repsonse to the foundation of the Czechoslovak state; the initial situation within the Catholic church in 1918 in Czechoslovakia and surrrounding Central European states (Austria, Poland, Germany, Hungary); the establishment and development of Czech and German Catholic organisations following the foundation of the Czechoslovak state; the origin, development and activities of Catholic political parties; the relationship between Czechoslovakia and the Vatican.
- 3.) The Catholic Church’s relationship to modernising spiritual movements and its social activities in the interwar period; the issue of the Catholic academic elite’s influence in presenting a picture of the church to the public; ideological, spiritual and theological transformations in Czech and Sudeten-German Catholicism.
- 4.) The mutual interaction of Czech and German Catholicism concerning the issue of the church and nationalism.
- 5.) Czech and Sudeten-German Catholicism in the post-Munich period; participation in the shaping of the authoritarian system of the Second Republic, the church’s position in the Sudetenland, connections with the Third Reich.
