Course objectives
Dutch literature for children and youth is an optional course for the Master programme. The aim is to learn the history and develpoment of the Dutch and Flemish literature for readers up to 16 years. During the course we will deal with various genres and topics: from the classical and modern story-telling motives up to multicultural topics, novels and literature of the Holocaust. We will above all discuss those authors who cross the boundary of children literature and whose books are appreciated also by the adults.
The theory that will be presented during the lectures will be applied to concrete books or fragments that the students will have to prepare in advance at home. The students will get an overview of the specific points of the literature for children and youth in comparison with the literature for the adults (the point of view of a child, relationship between the text and illustrations, tension between didactics and esthetics). The students will learn about the foremost and appreciated works of the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. They will also familiarize with topics and motives typical for the Netherlands and Flanders in contrast with the Czech background.

Assessment methods
A seminar work is required, which is a prerequisite for taking an exam. The exam is focused on the theory of literature for children and young people and on the contemporary state of children’s literature. Knowledge of primary and secondary literature will also be tested.
