Course objectives
The course is designed as a practical introduction into Latin for students of German language. It aims at providing students with a proficiency-oriented immersion in beginning Latin while emphasis is placed on the thorough study of the fundamentals of grammar (morphology and syntax). At the end of the course, successful students will be able to translate (using a dictionary) a self-contained elementary Latin text.
Syllabus
  • Morphology: verbs – tenses of the perfect system (perfect, pluperfect, future perfect), perfect and future infinitive, subjunctive mood; irregular verbs, participles, the gerund and gerundive, supine. Syntax: independent uses of the subjunctive, consecutive clauses, indirect speech, participle constructions, periphrastic conjugation, ablative absolute; uses of accusative and nominative in subordinate clauses, gerundive constructions.

Assessment methods
Active class attendance (75%) and conscientious preparation of grammar and translation assignments are the essential requirements for grade. Course grade is determined by performance in a final written exam where students’ mastery of basic grammar is tested through a translation of a short self-contained Latin passage (dictionary allowed).
