- Course objectives
- The objective of this course is the phenomenon of Medieval Latin from the point of view of both language and literature. It introduces students to the basic linguistic features of Medieval Latin. Moreover, it brings an overview of the most important literary forms and monuments of Medieval Latin.
- Syllabus
- Lecture: Subject and chronological delimitation of medieval Latin. History of the study of medieval Latin. Constitutive elements of medieval Latin (Classical, Vulgar and Ecclesiastical Latin). Dictionaries and tools pertaining to medieval Latin. The state of the Latin language after the decline of the Roman Empire. Latin of the Merovingian period. Ottonian Renaissance (as well as other "humanistic" movements of the Middle Ages up until the Renaissance humanism). Benedictine monasteries of the early Middle Ages. Insular Latin and its representatives. Christianization of the Bohemian lands and the beginnings of the Czech-Latin literature. Latin in the high Middle ages (major differences from the Classical Latin). Forms and genres of medieval Latin prose. Forms of medieval Latin poetry (metrical, rhythmic and variations). Medieval Latin religious poetry. Medieval Latin secular poetry. Seminar: Reading, translating and interpretation of selected literary as well as diplomatic texts.
