Course objectives
The course is aimed at interpreting the principle political, religious and cultural issues in the history of Eastern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Students will examine the history of the Polish reformation and counter-reformation, the activities of the Orthodox Brotherhood in Lithuania and Poland and also the church’s separation from the Russians. They will understand the development of political conditions characterised by the process of Russia coming nearer to Europe and will learn to distinguish the consequences which are visible to this day. They will gain arguments from which to consider how the various powers of both state and ruler were exercised during the Early Modern Age – the system of the estates (Poland and Lithuania), absolutism (Hungary, Prussia) and despotism (Russia).
