Knowledge of Latin to the extent of the B. A. State Exam. The exam itself is not required for the enrollment to the course.

Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to present the problems of research, interpretation and translation of medieval Latin literature, using a selected piece of work. In this semester, the course will focus on Chronicon Aulae regiae, which is the most extensive, most important and most advanced chronicle of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia. At the end of the course, students should be informed about state of research on the Chronicon, they should understand its language and style and be able to create a commented translation of a part of its text.
Syllabus
  • 1. State of research.
  • 2. Origin of the chronicle and its authors.
  • 3. Structure of the chronicle: prologues, structure, prosimetre.
  • 4. Characteristics of the genre: chronicle as a genre and minor genres involved in it (vision, letter, speech, prayer, planctus, epitaph, literary testament, vita, miracula).
  • 5. Rhetorical phenomena used in the chronicle and other features of its style (figures of speech, tropes, loci communes, cursus etc.).
  • 6. Literary context of the chronicle.
  • 7. Translation of the leonin hexametre.
  • 8. Reading the following passages: prologues, I/LXI, LXIII, LXXXI, LXXXVII, C, CIX, CXXX, II/ XVIII, XXIII, XXV, III/I.
