Course objectives
Besides a general characterization of the genre of short story, this course gives an outline of the history of the short story in Brazilian literature from the 19th century, focusing on the period from modernism up to the present. Based on the analysis of selected texts, it provides students with fundamental information about the short story production of the most important authors of particular tendencies.

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition of the subject matter Seminar: based on students´ homework consisting in reading selected short stories, the passages that are difficult or interesting from the point of view of its language or ideas are analysed in detail in the seminar; this is followed by interpretation of the short story and discussion of the given topic
Assessment methods
- activity during seminars - reading of the given short stories and of other texts - writing an essay on a selected topic
