- Course objectives
- This course aims at revealing important development tendencies in the context of Czech and world literature of the 20th century. Aestethical, topical and other relations will be shown by significant personalities of Czech literature. Primarily we will deal with interpretations of particular works and an insight to their meanings. This course will include a brief introduction to literary theory (poetics) and approaches to interpretations. Students are required to work with secondary sources.

- 1. Franz Kafka and absurdity in the Czech literature of 20th century. 2. Representants of catholic tendency in Czech literature of the 20th century 3. The group 42 4. The potentialities of a diary (Deml, Orten, Kolář, Zábrana, Vaculík) 5. Interwar avandgarde and Czech surrealism throughout the century 6. Karel Čapek 7. Oldřich Mikulášek, Jan Skácel, Karel Šiktanc, Jiří Šotola and literary journal of that time 8. Milan Kundera and Josef Škvorecký: Czech and world literature 9. František Halas a Vladimír Holan 10. František Hrubín and his poetry, prose and drama 11. Work of Bohumil Hrabal in a context 12. Czech postmodern novel (Kratochvil, Hodrová, Urban etc.)
