- Course objectives
- The course shifts attention from the author and the source text to the translator and the TL text as the result of his/her motivated choice. The close focus on patterns of translatorial decisions should help students view translators' work in the context of translation norms and the TL literature and increase their awareness of their own translation decisions. Apart from translations, a variety of secondary sources will be used, such as translator's statements and other (non-translation) texts by them. Much of our work will evolve around the concept of “translator's style” and the descriptive approach to studying translations. Students will be expected to contribute towards classwork by smaller independent research tasks. The list of translators covered in the course will include: P. Dominik, L. Šenkyřík, A. Přidal, R. Nenadál, A. Skoumal, P. Šrut, H. Žantovská, J. Hauková, J. Urbánková, M. Hilský. (It may be subject to changes depending on what we agree on in the course.)
- Assessment methods
- The completion of the course will involve a credit test towards the end of the semester (testing the "hard data" from the course) and a final essay. The course grade will incorporate the evaluation of the credit test, class performance and an essay (25, 25 and 50% respectively).
