Course objectives
If students write a seminar paper, their B.A. or M.A. thesis or simply a letter and wish to create a text which would not only be interesting, but also contained no mistakes, and could therefore be evaluated more favourably by the recipient, they can choose this optional course. This course is meant as a practical help to all who wish to create their texts (scholarly or other) without mistakes, using cultivated Czech. The course is focused on specific features of written texts - the topics to be dealt with include rules of writing Czech words, loan-words, capitalization, abbreviations, punctuation, hyphenation, as well as with morphological and syntactic issues reflected by orthography. Information about the most important books on these issues will also be included, as well as possibilities of solving problems which are not dealt with in them. Elementary terminology will also be dealt with in the course. Students will be able to apply the present-day rules of orthography and on the basis of the acquired knowledge will be able to identify offences again the language standard in specific texts assigned to them.
Syllabus
  • 1) Elementary terminology (usage, norm, codification) and sources, changes in codification in 1993; 2) Writing i/y after a specific group of consonants; writing ů/ú in Czech words and loan-words; 3) Writing bě/pě/vě/mě, masculines; 4) Pronouns, feminines; 5) Neuters, borderlines of words in writing; 6) Consonant clusters, adjectives; 7) Prepositions and prefixes s-/z-/vz-, numerals; 8) Punctuation in simple sentences; 9) Punctuation in comple and compound sentences; 10) Capitalization; 11) Loan-words; 12) Verbs. Teaching methods
The particular topics will always be linked with practical e-learning exercises. At the end of the course, there will be a written test checking the acquired knowledge. The course consists of seminars during which students learn to carry out an analysis of texts.
Assessment methods
The course is completed with a written credit test. Besides active work in seminars, attendance is required (2 absences are the maximum) to be allowed to take the final test. The test consists of two parts – one being a dictation, the other a cloze test based on rules of Czech orthography dealt with during the course.
