- Course objectives
- The course English for Academic Purposes I is aimed at developing academic/professional linguistic skills. The course deals with: 1. Reading - working with academic/professional texts that relate to the areas of study of FA & FSS students, and developing orientation, comprehension, and summarizing skills in relation to the readings; 2. Writing - expanding skills of summary writing, expressing ideas, and writing reports that pertain to the student's field of study; 3. Speaking and presentation development are important aspects of the course. Students must prepare a presentation (5 - 7 minutes long) given on an interesting topic relating to their field of study. This should be done using the relevant language and presentation tools provided in this course. Presentation preparation also involves improving abilities in leading/participating in discussions and responding to questions, requests, or comments appropriately. Other oral skills involve discussions, expressing one's own ideas, paraphrasing others' ideas, and summarizing the main ideas of academic/professional texts. 4. Listening skills - focus on developing aural comprehension in the context of discussions, presentations, and recordings. The focus is on understanding the main ideas of academic/professional audio texts, although listening for specific detailed information is also done.
