Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge of French.
Syllabus
  • A. PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY: The pronunciation of the french "e" and terminal sounds; the rules of liaison.
  • B. MORPHOLOGY:
  • I. NOUNS AND ADJECTIVES: Masculine and feminine gender, the formation of feminine in adjectives; position, irregural plural and comparison of adjectives.
  • II. DETERMINANTS: Usage of articles after negative; contraction of articles and prepositions.
  • III. PRONOUNS: Personal dependent, demonstrative, relative and interrogative pronouns; pronominal adverbs "en", "y".
  • IV. VERBS: Conjugation of the third-class verbs; imperative mood; conjugation of basic irregural verbs; passé composé of the reflexive verbs; phrasal verbs; imperfect; subjunctive.
  • V. NUMERALS: 1-1000; ordinal numerals; form of date.
  • C. SYNTAX:
  • I. Position of adverbial.
  • II. Word order in passé composé.
  • III. Position of pronouns in the indicative and imperative.
  • D. Vocabulary issues:
  • I. Getting acquainted.
  • II. Geography of France; travelling; Paris.
  • III. Description of a picture.
  • IV. In a hotel; in a restaurant.
  • V. Making a phone call; making an appointment.
  • VI. Letter; invitation and the reply.
  • VII. Contretemps and accidents.
  • VIII. Weekend activities; daily routine; chores.
  • IX. Jules Verne; travelling (e. g. by train), at the railway station.
  • X. On a visit; compliments; dinner at home.
  • XI. French at the table; eating and drinking.
  • XII. Malaises and illnesses.
  • XII. Description of the way.

Teaching methods
All the basic methods of CLT programme (Communicative Language TEaching)are used: individual, pair, group activities (conversation, practice, drill). Audition. Homework extended to e-learning self-study. 90% of teaching is in French.
Assessment methods
Final exam: 1. written part: grammar and vocabulary test, short essay (e. g. letter, description of a picture). 2. oral part: discussion on the everyday topics based on the issuses covered in the course.
