Course objectives
The course supplements the lectures on the historical development of Greek language and presents one of the phases of the development of Greek language: formation of present-day diglossia - Katharevousa versus Dimotiki. The main aim of the course is to acquire knowledge of history of Modern Greek language in historical and cultural-political context and to understand the causes of diglossia. The course provides a systematic interpretation of normative grammar of Katharevousa and its practical use for reading and language analysis of period texts (Korais, Kodrikas, Kommitas, Gregorius V, Roidis, Papadiamantis, etc.). At the end of the course students will understand the Greek language question and the term Katharevousa. They will be able to describe functional differentiation of Greek language – emergence and existence of specific language norms in the development of Greek language from Antiquity up to the present. They will be familiar with grammar of Katharevousa and they will use this skill in reading and translating of period texts.
