- Course objectives
- The subject of the course is all the changes that have happened in phonetic,morphological and syntactic systems of the Ukrainian language in various stages of its development, i.e. processes of constitution and development of the Ukrainian language from the ancient times to todays situation are studied, reasons causing these changes are revealed and place of the Ukrainian language among the other Slavonic languages is set.
- Syllabus
- 1. The subject and aims of Ukrainian historical grammar.
- 2. Contacts of the historical development with other scientific subjects.
- 3. The most important sources of studies of historical development of Ukrainian.
- 4. Ukrainian and the other Slavonic languages. Common and different features of Ukrainian, Russian and Belarussian languages. Specific features of Ukrainian in phonetics, morphology, vocabulary and syntax.
- 5. Origin and constitution of the Ukrainian language.
- 6. Subject of studies of historical phonetics. Formation of phonetic system of Ukrainian.
- 7. Extinction of jer in a weak position and change to o/e in a strong position.
- 8. Consequences of extinction of yer in the phonological system of Ukrainian (vowel and consonant system)
- 9. Change of o to i.
- 10. Hardening of half-palatalized and soft consonants.
- 11. Development of consonants zh, ch, sh, shch and ts.
- 12. Change of l to unsyllabic u (orthographic v).
- 13. History of bilabial sounds. Character of the old v. Origin of “f” sound.
- 14. Prothetic features.
- 15. Historical morphology. The subject and its aims.
- 16. Nouns. Extinction of the old nominal declension and constitution of new types of declension of Ukrainian nouns.
- 17. Pronouns – nouns. History of declension of personal, reflexive, interrogative, indefinite and negative pronouns. Parallels in endings of declension.
- 18. Adjectives. Restriction of use of nominal forms in the old Ukrainian. Constitution of short forms of adjectives. Substitution of dual forms by those of plural. Loss of category of gender in plural forms.
- 19. Development of numerals as a word class. Development of cardinal, indefinite, ordinal, collective numerals and fractions. Etymology of cardinal numerals. Cause of parallel endings in declension.
- 20. Regular and irregular verbs. Forms of present, past and future tenses. Relation between categories of verbal aspect and tense. Imperative and conditional mood. Development of participles and verbal adjectives.
- 21. Adverbs. Etymology of adverbs used most often in contemporary language.
- 22. Auxiliaries. Origin of prepositions, particles and conjunctions. Thein classes and etymology.
- 23. Origin of interjections and thein development.
- 24. Historical syntax. The subject and its aims.
- 25. Development of basic types of a simple clause in the old Ukrainian.Types of sentences.

- Teaching methods
- The course has a form of lectures and seminars. There is an oral examination at the end of this one-semester course. Requirement to be allowed to sit for the examination is to submit a written paper two weeks prior to the end of the semester.

- The course has a form of a lecture and a class discussion. Referat and oral exam.
