- Course objectives
- The course develops the ability to engage in literary criticism beyond the the first-term course. Students majoring in German Studies, in particular, should deepen their understanding of the various approaches to literary criticism and improve their academic writing skills.
The course presents a number of approaches to literary criticism on the example analyses of "Das Erdbeben zu Chili" by Heinrich von Kleist and "Das Urteil" by Franz Kafka. - Syllabus

- Teaching methods
- The seminar is based on reading of literary analyses and interpretations according to different approaches. The questioning in the class will sensibilisate the students for the preferences of the choosen methods. In short presentations by the students some crucial texts will be presented. The knowledge and skills acquired in the course have to be applied in the essay submitted in Odevzdávárna by May 31st, 2010.
- Assessment methods
- 1. Presentation of one of the recommended texts on Literary Criticism 2. Essay analysing W. G. Sebald's Austerlitz using the methodology of student's choice 3. Final quiz
The first draft of the essay should be handed in by the end of March, unless the student wishes to apply a methodology introduced later. The second draft should be handed in by the end of April. The final ("camera-ready") draft has to be submitted in Odevzdávárna by May 31st, 2010. - Language of instruction
