- Course objectives
- The course will familiarize students with Jan Mukařovskýs esthetics and criticism as they developed througout his career from the early psychologism, through the formalist and structuralist stages, to the marxist-leninist finale.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
to understand basic notions of Czech strukturalism;
to learn the history of Mukařovský's work;
to interpret his work independently
to locate structuralism in the broader context of literary theory. - Syllabus
- 1. Survey of Jan Mukařovskýs life and oeuvre.
- 2. Psychological beginnings (Otakar Zich).
- 3. The Russian formalist inspiration.
