Course objectives

Course introduces students to the history of American film distribution in Czechoslovakia, with particular focus on the period of so called normalization. We focus on the socio-political changes and especially on changes in film distribution of American films, publicity and audience response.

At the end of the course students should be able to explain the changes in Czechoslovak state film distribution and should be able to describe the shifts in understanding of Western film production.

Students will also be apprise with the structure of the Czechoslovak state film, its organization and elements important for distribution.

Students will have a better grasp of contemporary periodicals and sources after completing the course, so they can better use them for further analysis and research.

In period often called as normalization there were distributed nearly 350 American films into Czechoslovak cinemas.Course provides students with information of some particular movies and statistics on the film supply and demand, respectively audience response through charts of succes in cinemas. Featured films will be regard with the preferred genres and authors. The course will also focus on contemporary promotion and media's reflection (e.g. Kino , Film a doba, Scéna)
