The students who wish to enroll this course must enroll also to the course JAPX215 Japanese language IV
Students must be able to use hiragana and katakana and approx 150 basic kanji characters.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course is designed to further development of the skills in reading and writing basic Japanese. All students who intend to enroll to the course should be able to read and write hiragana, katakana and some basic kanji. Approximately 100 more kanji will be introduced during the semester. We will read articles in the style of diaries, folktales, personal ads, and so forth. We will also practice writing on various topics related to the reading materials.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define approx. 250 elementary kanji characters;
explain the usage of learned characters in reading, writing and transcribing simple Japanese texts;
apply the knowledge of the characters in reading, writing and transcribing simple Japanese words and sentences;
inspect the correctness of transcription of simple Japanese text written with respective characters;
formulate and write down elementary sentences;
assess the usage of learned characters in writing and transcribing simple texts.
