- Course objectives
- At the end of this course the students should be able to be acquainted with: • the ancient idea of “barbarian” and its development • the use of the image of “barbarian” on Attic vase painting as representation of the “other from the self” • the use of the image of “barbarian” in Rome as representation of (subdued) enemies • the characterization through costumes of ethnic differences

- Subjects of the lessons (ten 2-hour lessons): 1. “Barbarian”: one word for multiple meanings 2. “Barbarians” in the Attic vase painting of 6th and 5th century B.C.: Pigmies and Aethiops 3. “Anacreontic” and “Scythian” drinkers in Greek symposion 4. Attalus’s Gauls 5. Rome and the Germans: the “Varusschlacht” 6. The Roman triumph: the exhibition of the defeated barbarians 7. Costume as an ethnic indicator? 8. Barbarian women and the violence of war on the Columns of Trajan and Marcus Aurelius 9. Peoples and provinces: the image of the subjects 10. The East of Rome: Parthian and Sasanian in Roman art

- Assessment Written examination: multiple choice test (in English; in particular cases only, after a previous written request to the teacher, a Czech version of the test can be supplied) • Ten questions about an image – already seen during the lessons – each one with three questions (of which only one is correct), according to the subjects of the lessons Requirements for the test: • Knowledge of the contents of the lessons • The reading of some texts in literature is suggested
