- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce the system of Auxiliary Sciences of History to the students of Medieval Latin. Special attention will be paid to those disciplines that can help students to master the basics of primary research. The course will focus on the practical reading and understanding of selected primary texts, on converting historical dates, on blazoning coats of arms and the like. At the end of the course students should be able to work with primary, mostly written sources that are of the highest importance for their potential engagement in the research of the Latin Middle Ages.

- Basic definition and system of Auxiliary Sciences of History.
- Paleography (basic terminology, historical development of system of Latin writings in the Middle Ages).
- Diplomatics (history of the discipline, classification of diplomatic material, practical reading).
- Codicology (scriptoria, history of handwritten books, practical part).
- Chronology and historical metrology.
- Sigillography and heraldry.
