- Course objectives
- The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes in its self assessment grid the communicative skills: Understanding (Listening and Reading), Speaking (Spoken interaction and Spoken production) and Writing. In this seminar the main focus will be on the training of receptive language skills (understanding), such as listening and reading. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
- distinguish between the receptive and productive language skills as described in CEFR
- comment on the relevance of listening and reading in language teaching
- understand and explain typologies for listening activities
- interpret the relevance of reading in language teaching and talk about the process of reading
- work out and present a draft for a teaching unit according to the typologies - Syllabus
- During the course a theoretical foundation is provided and discussed but also, a lot of practical information for teaching German as a foreign language will be worked out. The seminar adresses especially to students who consider teaching languages in the future. Firstly, the role of listening in language teaching is drawn attention to. Then, a typology is for listening activities is worked out. Also, the role of reading in language teaching and the reading process as a learning process are analysed and discussed. Moreover, teaching units according to the typologie and the results of the discussion about reading vs. learning processes will be drafted, presented and discussed.
