- Course objectives
- The lecture points out the key moments of the German medieval literature up to the period of the late Middle Ages on the examples of selected literary works. Starting with the old German period (see above) till the important works of the old German period. (see above as well) We will also concentrate on the song writing of selected authors of the early new German period and on the key works of this period (see above as well).

- Syllabus: Revision: 1. "Welaga nu, waltant got, wewurt skihit! " German heroic epic on the example of the Song about Hildebrandt. 2. Selected old German and old Saxon literary works. 3. The empire of Charles the Great, his political and religious efforts "Renovatio Imperii". Alkuin von York as a leading personality of the religious renaissance of the period of Ch. the Great. 4. Roswitha von Gandersheim. 5. German Marian poetry of the Middle Ages. "Typology in the Middle Ages on the example of the Marian Song from Melk. 6. Continuation – early middle German period: Ezzolied, Annolied. 7. Basic concepts of the courtly poetry. 8. German "minnesang" and its main phases – short overview. 9. Courtly novel. "Erec" and "Iwein" by Hartmann von Aue. 10. The Song of the Niebelungs: "courtly - made" heroic song. 11. Mönch von Salzburg, Oswald von Wolkenstein: late lyric. 12. "Oráč z Čech" (The Ploughman of Bohemia) and his poetical idea, his place in the early new German literature.
