- Course objectives
- Theories of Understanding in European Hermeneutics F.D.E. Schleirmacher(M. Heidegger, H.-G. Gadamer, C.G. Jung). M. Heidegger: understanding as one of the essential and original properties of Dasein. Understanding as the purposeful human activity in the life-world. H.-G. Gadamer: understanding and Platonic dialogue. Gadamers conception of a dialectical, historical and projecting character of understanding. Understanding and speech events (sprachliches Geschehen)Understanding in the context of tradition. C. G. Jung: understanding and the theory of archetypes. The importance of archetypal structures for human understanding. Theories of understanding in Anglo-American Philosophy - P. Winch: understanding in relation to cultural context and social practices. C. Taylor: the influences of Wittgensteins theory of language games. Ethical and existential dimension of understanding. H. Bloom: Understanding, new readings, proof-readings and re-evalutions. Understanding and misunderstanding. R. Rorty: understanding as dialogue of interpretations. Criterion of understanding - consensus within historically concrete community. At the end of the course, the students should be able: to acquire a reflect new theories of understanding; to be aware the humanities and social sciences have their special significance in the fact that no experience thez deal with can be closed and finished; thez ought to be aware that in contrast to the natural sciences, the humanistic disciplines have no methodically assured results that we can pass along free of questions.
