Course objectives
The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of pragmatics and its basic terms and notions. Students should be able to define these terms. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and make deductions on acquired knowledge. At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions and bring serious arguments to support their thesis.

  • Communication and language function.
  • The role of context.
  • Speech act theory.
  • Assertive communication.
  • Cooperative communication.
  • Manipulation in communication.

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms and their exemplification on different types of specific text, proceeding from diverse registers. Exposition of basic pragmalinguistic theories. Application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. During the class discussions students be able to show their ability to interconnect their theoretical knowledge and practical analysis of a specific text. Czech language is required.
Assessment methods
Credit: active participation and attendance is required (80%)
Exam: oral exam based on the exposed and commented items and practical analysis of a text.
