Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a survey of the development of Bulgarian and Macedonian literature in the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The characteristics of the dominant styles, genres, tendencies and creative methods is based on the contextual analysis of the most significant works of the period. Literary development on the territory of Bulgaria and Macedonia is examined in the context of the domestic as well as European historical and cultural developments. The seminar is based on the intensive home reading and the analysis of relevant texts. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of several epochs of the development of Bulgarian and Macedonian literature and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.

  • 1. Fight for independent Bulgarian Church and its cultural consequences. 2. Origins of modern Bulgarian poetry. 3. Selected issues of versology and naratology, studied using the examples of Bulgarian and Macedonian literature. 4. Elements of romanticism in Macedonian literature e, issue of bi-literary features. Significance of folk oral literature e and its collectors. 5. Revolutionary democrats Rakovski, Botev, Karavelov. 6. Phenomenon of Macedonian national revival, different concepts of possible form of literary Macedonian language. 7. Bulgarian realism. 8. Ivan Vazov and Konstantin Veličkov. 9. Critical realism. 10. Origins of Bulgarian literary critical thinking, first wave of Bulgarian modernism. 11. Period of Macedonian separatism in eighties and nineties of the19th century and the work of Krst Petkov Misirkov. 12. Bulgarian symbolists 13. Selected problems of Bulgarian and Macedonian drama.

Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance (min. 70 %) and thorough home preparation on weekly basis, participation in class discussion. Oral exam.
