Course objectives
Continuation of normative grammar of the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek. The aim of the course is the survey of the main themes of the Ancient Greek grammar and syntax, so that the student would be able to read the original texts (with help of a dictionary).
At the end of the course students should be able to: reproduce grammatical rules and paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course); apply grammatical rules in translating sentences into Greek and into Czech; describe the grammatical structure of a clause and distinguish morphological and syntactic devices used in the sentence; use synonymous expressive means to express selected grammatical phenomena; record selected vocabulary (with emphasis on verbs).
Syllabus
  • 1. Revision. Plosive consonant stemes.
  • 2. Declension: liquid consonant stems.
  • 3. Irregular comparison of adjectives and adverbs; declension of comparatives, numerals and pronouns.
  • 4. Relative pronouns; passive sigmatic aorist and passive future of verbs with vocalic and consonant explosive stems; consecutive clauses.
  • 5. Declension of nt-stems; declension of participles (pres.+fut. act.; aor. act.+pass.).
  • 6. Verbs with contracted e-stems, rules for vowel contraction in Ancient Greek.
  • 7. Declension: s-stems.
  • 8. Verbs with contracted a-stems; subjunctive in main clauses.
  • 9. Verbs with contracted o-stems; subjunctive in subordinate clauses, final clauses.
  • 10. Declension of vocalic stems.
  • 11. Declension of diphthongal stems.
  • 12. Revision.

Teaching methods
Lectures, grammar excercises, homeworks, reading of simple Greek texts, translation from and into Greek.
Assessment methods
Colloquium means one written test during the semester, written test at the end of the semester and conversation about some text. The test includes all grammar explained in finished chapters of Lexis, and consists of translation of a text from Greek to Czech, translation of simple sentences and phrases from Czech to Greek, identifying and translating verb forms and inflecting nouns.
