- Course objectives
- This course is an introduction into the study of the Mycenaean epigraphy and dialect and of its place among the other Greek dialects. Characteristics of the Mycenaean civilization as the first important period in the history of Greek people.
The main aim of the course is to acquire the knowledge of history of Mycenaean Greek in linguistic, historical and cultural-political context. At the end of this course the students should be able to describe the history of Mycenology; identify the Aegean Syllabic and Cypriot Scripts; analyse the texts of the Linear B Script; explain the main features of Mycenaean Greek; sketch the survey of the development of Early Greek. - Syllabus
- 1.The archaeological, ethnical and linguistical background of the Mycenaean civilization.
- 2. The decipherment of the Linear B Script. History of Mycenology.
- 3. Aegean syllabic writing systems (Cretan Hieroglyphic Script: 2200-1600 B-C.; Cretan Linear A: 1900-1450; Creto-Mycenaean Linear B: 1400-1200 B.C., used for Mycenaean Greek; Cypriot-Minoan: 1550-1100; Classical Cypriot: 1050-200 B.C., used for Cypriot Greek).
- 4. The System of Linear B Script /ideograms = pictograms, syllabograms for syllables, signs for numerals and measures; orthographical rules); specimina of LB texts.
- 5. Texts of the Linear B Script, finding places of the inscriptions, the chronology of the texts and their classification according to the content. Reading of the inscriptions.
- 6. Mycenaean phonology.
- 7. Mycenaean morphology (Word-formation, Parts of Speech, Nominal and Verbal Categories, Mycenaean Inflection (declension, conjugation).
- 8. The Mycenaean lexical stock and its relation to the Homeric language and to the Classical Greek dialects. Semantic changes and shifts within the Mycenaean expressions.
- 9. Mycenaean Syntax.
- 10. The Contribution of Mycenaean to the etymological study of Ancient Greek.
- 11. The linguistic character of Mycenaean and its place among the other Greek dialects.
- 12. The survey of the development of Early Greek until ca 500 B.C.
