- Course objectives
- The aim of the course of HIstory of Portuguese Language is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of etymologic evolution of the Portuguese from the period of the Vulgar Latin to the contemporary age. The seminar offers relatively detailed information about the regulars of the phonetic evolution and its phonologic interpretation, resuming the principals of the evolution of the morphology and also, if the time permits, of the evolution of selected syntactic construction, vocabulary, inclusive the anosmatic and Portuguese dialects. But the main objective is to explain the traditional emphasis in the phonetic and morphologic changes. The supposition for this seminar is the knowledge of the phonetic and phonologic terminology, and en elemental knowledge of the Latin. A regular preparation for every lection is indispensable so that an etymologic analyze of the medieval texts included in every lection could be possible. The texts date from the century XIII-XV and they are included in the main used bibliography - „História da Língua Portuguesa“, from, Wilhelm Meyer Lubke. As for the Brazilian and African Portuguese, specific characteristics are founded in the lections in authentic recourses of the spoken Portuguese and its variants (CD – Documentos Autênticos do Português falado). T Students should be able to define basic terms of etymology. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions. At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce and explain the rules of basic historical-linguistic phenomena and identify the deviations from the standard. He or she will be able justify and bring serious arguments to support his or her thesis. Eventually, he or she will be able to propose a solution in accord with the standard.
