- Course objectives
- The course Buddhism II follows the course Buddhism I and it is devoted to an overview of the history of spread of Buddhism in Asia and elsewhere around the World. The course also deals with the diversification of Buddhist schools and contents of their teachings.
Main objectives of the course are:
- to describe key moments in the history of Buddhism from Buddha´s death until modern times;
- to define basic philosophical issues of the teachings of particular Buddhist schools;
- to practice basic terminology in Sanskrit and Pali;
- to recognize the most important sources to the study of particular Buddhist schools;
- to differentiate forms and (self)presentations of Buddhism in modern society - Syllabus

Beginnings of Mahayana, development of the concept of Mahayana in Western academic discourse, arhat vs. bodhisattva 2. The concept of a bodhisattva, Paramita, Bodhisattvacharya 3. Development of Buddhist philosophy, Mahayana schools - Madhyamika, Yogacara 4. Prajnaparamita, Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, Nirvana=Samsara, concepts of Upaya and Prajna 5. Buddhist art and iconography - aniconic period, iconic pictures of Buddha, Buddha and bodhisattva, mudra, concept of Trikaya 6. Buddhism and the Silk Road - spread of Buddhism, important settlements, discovering of the Silk road by Western scholarship 7. Arrival of Buddhism to China, Buddhism and other religion in China and Central Asia 8. Vajrayana, Tantra, categories of Tantras, Kalachakratantra and its intepretations in the West 9. Buddhism in Tibet - history, schools and concepts 10. Buddhism in China - schools of Chinese Buddhism, Tribune Sutra and Cchan 11. Buddhism in Japan - schools of Japanese Buddhism, Amidism, Lotus Sutra 12. Buddhism in the West - periods of its spread, basic features of transformations

- Colloquim and basic requirements for the oral exam
Requirements for colloqium are identical with basic requirements for oral exam:
(a) written test I. concerning the topics discussed in lectures 1-5
(b) written test II. concerning the topics discussed in lectures 6-12
Exam
The exam is oral and is focused on:
(a) examining students knowledge according to given list of themes;
(b) examining students interpretation abilities within these themes.
In case of failure in test, test(s) become written part of the exam and it is necessary to write them on the same date before the oral exam.
