Course objectives
Seminars will be primarily aimed at analyses and interpretations outstanding works of literary canon of the second half of the 20th century. Texts will be examined on the basis of both synchronic and diachronic approach. An attention will be also paid to general social-historic context, literary-critical reception and issues of literary genres.
At the end of this course the student will be able to understand literary text;
to interpret literary works in historical context;
to work with the secondary literature creatively;
to work with information to formulate expertise clearly;
students will be able to think about literature critically. A part of this course is devoted to works from the list of required reading
Syllabus
  • Dr. Balaštíks seminars will be aimed at interpretations of principal fictional works of the second half of the 20th century, icluding their position in society and general cultural context and literary criticism of that period. 1) Conditions of the Literature after 1948 2) Explication of the books by Jiřího Kolář, Bohumil Hrabal, Ladislav Fuks, Josef Škvorecký, Pavel Kohout, Milan Kundera, Ludvík Vaculík, Ivan Wernisch atd.
  • The seminar of Mgr. Kára is focused on analysis of chosen Czech literature works from the second half of the 20th century and beginning of 21st century, including interpretation and culture context. The main Themis and primary sources: 1. Birth of an author (Milan Kundera, Směšné lásky); 2. An Author and Normalization (Ladislav Fuks, Spalovač mrtvol; Vévodkyně a kuchařka); 3. In exile but at home (Josef Škvorecký, Mirákl; Příběh inženýra lidských duší); 4. Experiment as a necessity (Jiří Gruša, Dotazník); 5. A Child and A History (Bohumil Hrabal, Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále); 6. Personality in exile (Viktor Fischl, Dvorní šašci); 7. An Enchantment with Postmodernism (Michal Ajvaz, Návrat starého varana); 8. Sobriety and The End of Postmodernism (Jiří Kratochvil, Avion; Kruhová leč); 9. An Intellect on Duty of Prank (Patrik Ouředník, Europeana; Ad acta); 10. Samizdat and Self-Reflection (Ludvík Vaculík, Český snář); 11. Life and Work Or His Own Personal Life as A Theme of His Life (Pavel Kohout, Kde je zakopán pes)

Dědinová is focused on: Jiří Weil (Na střeše je Mendelssohn, Život s hvězdou), Josef Škvorecký (Zbabělci), Jiří Orten (Elegie), Experimentální poezie v 60. letech 20. století (Antikódy Václava Havla), Absurdní drama (Zahradní slavnost Václava Havla), Jan Skácel (Smuténka), Ludvík Vaculík (Český snář), Jáchym Topol (Kloktat dehet), Fenomén písničkářství.
  • The seminar of Dr.Schildberger will focus on the following topics: the work of Oldřich Mikulášek (To královské), the work of Jan Skácel (Mezi psem a vlkem), dramatic and prosaic work of Milan Uhde (Král-Vávra, Ošetřovna a Záhadná věž B).
