Course objectives
Survey of architecture from 1890s to 1950s
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to identify and discuss within their historical framework: major architectural movements; important buildings; and major architects.

  • Breaking with the Past, Beholden to the Past: Nineteenth-Century Roots of a Twentieth-Century Architecture
  • The Arts and Crafts Movement, the Art Nouveau, the Chicago school
  • The Deutscher Werkbund, Adolf Loos, and the Problems of Ornament and Style in the 20th Century
  • New Movements: Futurism, Cubism, De Stijl, and Constructivism
  • Le Corbusier, Functionalism, The International Style
  • American architekture after World War II.
