Course objectives
In this course advanced students of Dutch as a foreign language are introduced in business Dutch. At the end of the course students should be able to correspond (writing formal letters and emails), converse, have a conference, minute, negotiate, report and present issues in Dutch. The text book Taal in zaken. Zakelijk Nederlands voor anderstaligen (2003) by Christine van Baalen serves as a basis. Attention is payed to business in an intercultural context.

  • Conversations: theory (introduction)
  • Conversations: practice (business conversations, evaluating people) + Telephone conversations: theory
  • Thelephone conversations: practice (telefoongesprekken) + Correspondence: theory (introduction / information letters)
  • Correspondence: theory (letters to ask somebody a favour, letters of complaint, letters conveying bad news, application letters, memo, fax and e-mail)
  • Correspondence: discussion/evaluation information letters + Conversation: theory job interviews
  • Correspondence: discussion/evaluation application letters + conversations: practice (job interviews)
  • Correspondence: discussion/evaluation request letters, memo/fax/e-mail + Negotiating: theory

Teaching methods
A combination of lecture and seminar (two hours per week); within the class a combination of teacher-led activities (theory) and student-centered learning activities will be employed (practice).
Assessment methods
Classes every week (two hours)
Weekly written and oral assignments are graded and evaluated. At the end of the semester, students hand in a file with all their corrected written assignments and a larger assignment (a report).
In the last classes each students gives a presentation.
The file with written assignments, the report, the presentation and the oral assignment are graded. The student needs to have a minium of 55 percent for all assignments together, in order to get a credit for this subject.
