Course objectives
Continuation of normative grammar of the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek. The main aims of the course are to deepen the knowledge of Ancient Greek grammar with respect to the later development of the language.
At the end of the course students should be able to: reproduce nominal and verbal paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course); explain grammatical rules studied within the course; translate easy Greek texts using a dictionary; explain the functions of selected syntactic structures; understand and derive the emergence of Modern Greek grammar forms on the basis of Ancient Greek forms.
Syllabus
  • 1. Revision of present tense and imperfect tense 2. Strong aorist active and middle voice 3. The role of aorist, perfective condition. 4. Weak aorist active and middle voice 5. Future tense active and mediopassive 6. Personal, relative, demonstrative pronouns. 7. Comparison of adjectives. 8. Consonant stems – explosive sounds. 9. Consonant stems – liquid sounds. 10. Irregular comparison of adjectives and adverbs. 11. Weak aorist passive. 12. Weak future tense passive. 13. Summary and revision.

Teaching methods
Lectures, practice (grammar exercises), reading of simple Greek texts, drill.
Assessment methods
Students’ active attendance is necessary. Credits are obtained by passing a written test (12 lessons of the textbook Lexis)in the end of semester. The test consists of a short coherent Greek text translation, a translation of sentences from Greek into Czech, identifying verb forms exercise and a translation of verb forms (from and into Czech), declension of nouns and adjectives.
