- Course objectives
- Main topic of the course are Overseas Chinese - communities originated in the migration of Chinese people abroad. At the end of the course student will have a basic knowledge of causes, historical contexts and patterns of major migratory waves from Chinese cultural areas toward overseas and will be acquainted with the culture of the regions of which migration is based, and which significantly affects the structure and operation of overseas Chinese communities around the world. Students will also create awareness about the key target areas of migration and characteristics Chinese migrant communities in different countries of the world. They should also be able to understand interdependencies, relationships and commonalities among different waves of migration and different migrant communities around the world.

- 1. Introduction, obligation for completition, distribution of topics
- 2. Basic terms, theories and patterns of Chinese migration
- 3. History of Chinese migration abroad
- 4. Origin of migration and ties to the region of origin - culture, language and religion
- 5. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Korea
- 6. Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia
- 7. Thailand, Vietnam, Burma, the Philippines, Australia
- 8. Chinese in North America (USA, Canada)
