- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is twofold: (a) introduction to principal themes and problems in anthropology and sociology with reference to studying religion; (b) practical training in research process in anthropology/sociology.
After passing the course the students should:
Have practical experience with planning and carrying on the social scientific research: They should be aware
of practical difficulties concerning the problem formulation and its operationalization;
of practical difficulties concerning the data collection;
of practical difficulties concerning the data analysis;
of demands of the research on time and effort as a resource for carrying on particular research tasks;
Concerning the theory students should gain a hand-on experience with the principal anthropological/sociological themes like:
body and its social and cultural significance;
social institutions and formation of society and culture;
social organization of human activities;
cultural symbols as resources in social mobilization, negotiation and the management of problems in life;
identity formation, belonging and relatedness;
significance of the patterns in social action and knowledge, including definition of situation, prejudice and stereotyping;
political negotiation, power, and marginalization. - Syllabus

2. Historical and political aspects in the formation of the research agenda in anthropology and sociology and the division of labour between these disciplines
3. Body and its social and cultural significance
