Course objectives
The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of lexicology and semantics. Students should be able to define and explain basic terms of semantics and lexicology and the relation of semantics to other scientific disciplines.

  • 1. Word: a concept
  • 2. Word-formation in Spanish language. Internal structure. External structure
  • 3. General concept of meaning. Variation and change in Spanish lexicon
  • 4. Models for lexicon studies. Structuralist model. Generative model
  • 5. Dictionaries: applied lexicology and semantics

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms of lexicology and semantics and their exemplification on Spanish texts. Seminar: application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts (semantic analysis).
