Course objectives
The aim of this course for the participants is to acquire the knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of teaching English to speakers of other languages and thus to lay the foundations for the participants to become effective teachers of English when they expand their knowledge and combine it with their practical skills development during the course UZAJ203 - Practice teaching - in the following semester.
By the end of the course participants will have been introduced to and have a basic understanding of:
1. How learners acquire the four Language systems (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, functions)and Language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
2. What is involved in order to effectively teach the Language systems and skills to speakers of other languages.
3. What classroom management comprises, how and when to correct learners' errors, and the steps necessary in order to plan a lesson effectively.
By the end of the course the participants should also have a sound knowledge of and be able to use the basic terminology found in current ELT literature.
Syllabus
  • The course comprises online asynchronous, reading and discussion based modules, which deal with the teaching of the systems and skills in English. The following topics will be addressed during the semester: 1. Classroom Management 2. Teaching Vocabulary 3. Teaching Pronunciation 4. Teaching Listening 5. Teaching Reading 6. Accuracy versus Fluency 7. Teaching Speaking 8. Teaching Writing. There are no face to face sessions.

Teaching methods
The course is an online course in the Moodle platform ELF, which requires learners to read given texts and participate in discussion forums on a weekly basis.
Assessment methods
In addition to having participated in the online discussion the trainees need to take and obtain 60% in three online quizzes based on the literature being read during the semester, and an ELT terminology test.
