Course objectives
The Těšín part of Silesia is an example of a region where three nations and their culture penetrated each other. The process of development of the national consciousness was running longer here. As one of the results of this fact, there even arose a group of inhabitants referring to themselves as Silesians, which existed there in the first half of the 20th century. The history of the region was very complicated in the 20th century, which influenced its national structure. The lecture will concern on the part of the Těšín part of Silesia which has been belonging since 1920 to Czechoslovakia and nowadays to the Czech Republic (the Těšín Region), because it was right here where the mutual penetrating of all nations living together at this place – mainly Czechs and Poles, who have been dominating as far the number of members of these nations. The course takes into account the international context of the historical developments which very often had a large influence on the creating of national relationships in the Těšín Region.
Syllabus
  • 1) Literature, general introduction, basic terms.
  • 2) Political and national developments in the Těšín part of Silesia in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century.
  • 3) The Těšín part of Silesia as an object of territorial disputes between Poland and Czechoslovakia 1918-1920.
  • 4) The relationships in the Těšín Region in the twenties.
  • 5) The Těšín Region as an object of Polish foreign policy and its influence on local relationships.
  • 6) The annexation of the Těšín Region to Poland, the Second World War, the national policy of the Nazis in the Těšín Region.
  • 7) The Czechoslovak-Polish dispute over the Těšín Region and its influence on the national relationships during the first years after the Second World War; the transfer of Germans.
  • 8) The Polish minority and Czech-Polish relations during the years of so called Stalinism (1948-1956), the national policy of the Czechoslovak state.
  • 9) The Polish minority and Czech-Polish relations in the Těšín Region in the sixties.
  • 10) The Polish minority and Czech-Polish relations in the Těšín Region during the period of so called normalisation.
  • 11) Trends in the development of the Polish minority and Czech-Polish relations within the last decade of the 20th century.
