Course objectives
The course taught in English aims at developing the understanding of Japanese culture and society by means of the media of film. Students will gain understanding of how Japanese popular culture and media – particularly cinema – have shaped the perceptions and expectations of what the society and culture is or should be. Classes consist of screening selected movies, short introductory lectures concerning main topics of these movies, and open discussions.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define stereotypes connected to the image of Japanese culture and society in selected movies;
explain these stereotypes in relation to a broader social and cultural circumstances;
interpret processes of creating stereotypical images of Japan in media, particularly in cinematography;
analyse main elements of the image of Japanese culture and society in selected movies;
shape their critical approach toward the stereotypical images of Japan in popular culture.
